The Collection at Pictures in Motion Part 2

June 2022

In Our Collection No 2

One of the dilemmas for Pictures in Motion has been correctly recording the sheer volume of artifacts donated and collected over the years.  Ranging from a tiny lapel microphone through large cinema projectors to enormous video tape recorders which fill half a room. As well we have collections of media items such as the 16mm film library, 35mm films, CD’s and DVDs, film slides, film posters, equipment handbooks, technical textbooks, books on movies and their stars, papers from estates and miscellany of related objects.

Over many years, members have been diligently toiling to record and label these objects, so we have an easily accessible record of them and their donors. To date we have completed and recorded to separate data bases the following collections.

  • Movie Books, Textbooks, Handbooks
  • Lyn Giblett library of books on the cinema stars
  • 16mm film library
  • Home and education cinema 16mm and 8mm projectors, cameras and editing equipment

Currently  Film Librarian Keith Rutherford, Shauna Dean, and Trevor Kelly are working on this project with Tim O’Dea coordinating our efforts.

Using an application for Android Phone/Tablet, iPhone/iPad and PC developed by Tim we are now in the process of consolidating these separate data bases to a single file stored in a cloud and which will make photographs and details available for online research.

The latest milestone has seen the completion of recording items in TV Storeroom D. This room houses 270 objects mainly from the television collection, mainly domestic cameras, and video recorders. With this under our belts we will now move on the White room which houses many of the cameras, both studio and ENG. Also, domestic television sets and recorders.

Now that we have proved the efficacy of the app in recording object details we are keen to expand our number of teams. We meet at Sunset Nedlands each Tuesday morning for a working session followed by a very social morning tea where people reminisce about the glory days of cinema and television, oh and the state of the world. So, if you would like a convivial busy morning please contact  info@picturesinmotion.com.au
