While every object in our extensive collection has a story behind it and many objects are of great significance to cinema or television in Western Australia there are others whose story is more modest and may need a little more detective work to uncover. This small domestic Sony “Bicentenary” model CCD-Au200 Video 8 Handicam is a case in point.
We can just imagine the scene in when in 1987 as part of Australia’s bicentennial celebrations a fleet of tall ships from all around the world sailed into Fremantle harbour en-route to Sydney for the Australia’s Bicentennial celebrations. Led by the Polish training ship Dar Młodzieży with its crew standing on the spars it was a truly remarkable experience and, who knows perhaps this very camera was newly purchased to record this spectacular event.
Sony released two new Video -8 camera/recorders, the limited edition “Bicentenary” economy model CCD-AU200, and the CCD-V50E model featuring a digital image memory and superimpose feature.
